Fishing in Alaska is different from fishing anywhere else
in the world. It's an angler's dream. Alaska's summer waters teem with five
kinds
of wild Pacific salmon (king/chinook, silver/coho,
red/sockeye, pink/humpback and chum),plus halibut the size of barn doors,
hefty
rainbow trout and delicate arcticgrayling
that slash at flies. Altogether, Alaska has 21 recognized species of sport
fish in its
streams, lakes and oceans.Fishing in Alaska
can be as easy as buying a license and heading for a stream or lake --
or it can
be a daylong boat charter in Prince William
Sound or a week's worth of fly-in remote backcountry action where anglers
watch for fish and for bears.
Resident fishing licenses cost $24 per year.
Nonresident military personnel also pay $24 a year.
Anglers under age 16 don't need a license.
Nonresident license fees
1 day $20
3 days $35
7 days $55
14 days $80
1 year $145
King salmon stamps The cost of a king salmon
stamp, needed for anyone trying to catch chinooks,
costs $10 a year for a resident. People fishing
for other species don't need to buy a king stamp.
In other words, a resident of Alaska can get
a fishing license ($24) and a king stamp ($10)
for a total of $34. A nonresident who buys
a 7-day fishing license ($55) and a
king stamp ($30) will pay $85.
